![]() ![]() Support from the coaching world #PackerAndDurham /ERP4kojHNn - Duke Women's Basketball July 14, 2020 Check out some of these interviews below. After the introduction, Lawson fielded questions regarding her expectations for Duke, what she brings to Duke and her thoughts on leaving the Celtics organization.įollowing the introductory press conference, Lawson participated in interviews with ESPN's Golic and Wingo, ACC Network's Packer & Durham, The Athletic, The Ovies & Giglio show, The Adam Gold show and others. To kick off the media blitz, Lawson's first appearance as the leader of the Duke program was introduced by Director of Athletics Kevin White and Senior Deputy Director of Athletics/Administration, Legal Affairs and Chief of Staff Nina King. Since then, Lawson has coached for USA Basketball and was most recently an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics. The former WNBA All-Star has a diverse amount of experience coaching since retiring from the league in 2016. Lawson's arrival to Durham has made multiple headlines and has received an enormous amount of support. Adam Gold, Joe Ovies, and JP Giglio are all snark, all the time.Story Links DURHAM, N.C.- Over the last number of days since Kara Lawson took over the head coaching position with the Duke women's basketball program, she has been making the rounds on the media circuit. But I agree with OP that RDU afternoon sports radio has gotten worse, and substantially so. Maybe he got personal with Don Curtis over his political differences or something else entirely, and that was that. Of course Gottlieb would have nothing to do with it.Īgain, I don’t know him, or the actual circumstances that led to the show being canned. When Gottlieb would not cite any hard evidence but continued to claim he was right, DG challenged him to $1 million bet that it was not happening. When Doug Gottlieb made the unfounded comment after the duke loss in 2016 that Roy was going to retire and be replaced by Hubert Davis, DG had him on and confronted him as to what facts/sources did he have to make that claim. ![]() Yeah he could be long winded and tended to get increasingly self congratulatory recently (maybe that was his way of reminding ownership the asset he believed they would be losing if they cut him), but it was not difficult for me to look past that given he always strove to be fair in his commentary, welcomed listener calls, and regularly had guests both local and national that are not regularly heard in any one show otherwise. (It was his extensive article in the Sports Journal on Matt Doherty and friction with many players and parents that blew this board up and shined a public spotlight on the issues that were brewing.) I have always found him to be one to be thorough in his information gathering and drawing his opinions on facts, even if it was a conclusion I disagreed with. I have never known him, but have listened to his show fairly regularly dating to when it was Saturday mornings while he was editing and publishing the ACC Sports Journal as his full time job. I am guessing he had been confronted off air more than once and he knew his job loss was a possibility but he meant what he said about being true to his vision of the show, and by saying it on air he was confirming to all involved including himself. I have noticed DG has said several times over the last couple years that he has now made enough money that he has reached a point where he is not going to let fear of loss of income determine what he comments on if it is within the parameters of his show’s subject matter of sports. Many of the stations he owns statewide that made up much of the audience for Dave Glenn’s show tend to be in towns that skew rather conservative: Winston, Boone, High Point, Burlington, Goldsboro. UNC alum Don Curtis is quite conservative in his political views, and I don’t know but can envision him being highly supportive of our current President. DG was not one to shy away from voicing his displeasure over actions of the current administration, especially when that admin inserted itself into sports in ways he thought inappropriate, or over policies like NC HB2 that resulted in the state losing high profile sporting events such as the NBA All Star game and NCAA Tournament. ![]() I have a feeling it was over ownership displeasure with political comments/backlash from advertisers discontent with the political comments. If I read one of Bynum’s Twitter comments correctly, this was not a ratings driven decision. So basically it appears DG was cold canned by Curtis Media. I think I recall hearing him on NC News Network. Patrick Johnson will host the next two weeks, with a permanent host TBD. According to RL Bynum, who reports on NC sports media happenings as well as UNC hoops/football:Ĭurtis Media, which carried the Dave Glenn Show statewide outside the 99.9 Fan RDU market, will continue to carry a sports talk show in the noon-3 slot. ![]()
